I have my first job interview in about 13 years next week. The work environment is casual. Even saying "business casual" is too formal. I have a suit, but was told by a friend that people aren't wearing suits to interviews these days. Any suggestions? Everyday work wear would probably be khakis and practical shoes. thanks for your help.
Personally, I still think a suit would be perfectly appropriate. Once you're hired then you can do the business casual thing but a suit, to me, still says you're taking the interview (and implied, the job) seriously.

I think both posters above have it right. You are an interviewee, not an employee. They know you will dress down to the norm if they hire you. But you show seriousness and respect for the process by wearing your suit. You could compromise a little on the shoes by not having any heel height. Recognize though that female interviewers who are in more casual clothes could have some feelings about being less dressed than you, so you will have to watch for cues and body language and take steps to put them at ease if it looks like a problem.

I think suit is entirely called for here as at the interview process . You can concentrate on business casual after you get hired . I would definately go with the suit here .
Ask the HR person who sets up the interview what is appropriate. I'm having an interview at a bank and I'm in a new environment. Where I used to live, the bankers wore polo shirts and khakis, but here she suggested I wear a suit. So I've reverted to my best "get thee to a nunnery" oh so ladylike suit and high heeled pumps.
The HR person wants you to get the job, since she chose you for it, so ask her (or him).
Go for the suit. You can't go wrong with a suit; you can go wrong with an outfit that's too casual. Khakis might be OK for the workday, but you're not working there yet.

You apparently know that the environment is casual, so why not just bump it up a notch and wear a nice button-down with slacks and a tie (take a jacket with you just in case). I think that is very appropriate. A suit would be overboard, imo.

rkb is female....the tie might be a bit much.
And I always heard that saying as dressing for the job you aspire to as opposed to the job you have....
