Go with what looks nice. If your shoes are classically styled, they won't get dated.
He lives in Houston and works in the oil industry. There is a very good chance he is going to be meeting people who know exactly what brand of shoe he is wearing.

OP: If you can't afford to spend $$$, buy the best pair you CAN afford without going into debt. And polish them until you can see yourself in their reflection.

Go to a really good store like NM and talk with the salespeople. Explain your situation and see what they have to say. They may not be able to knock anything off the price of the shoe but they should be able to show you what's in style and what you should be looking for.

Good luck!

Hello guys. I am also looking for a pair of dress shoes that are stylish, comfortable and will last long. I will be working a a financial services firm in NYC.

I looked at Jos A Babk, Charles Tyrwhitt, Brooks Brothers shoes. They are not as expensive as Neiman Marcus. What do you guy think about these brands?

Dillard's is your best bet, OD. Go to the men's shoes section and they have dress shoes from all brands. This is where I hang around.

If you go to a specialty shoe store like Johnston, they'll rip you off. The same shoes marked as 450$ in the specialty store, I picked it up for 140 in Dillard's. SAME, Johnston & Murphy

They have a rack for K Cole too.

But what's the use in buying expensive clothes when one is out of shape and chunky This is the general profile of guys in the corporate world. Expensive clothes, but still looking funky coz they are so out of shape LOL

I can afford clothes in NM, but I dislike spilling that kind of money often. I like Express, they make clothes targeting the fit guys demographic exclusively, and a 59$ shirt, and a 79$ pants are not too bad. And pick up shoes in Dillard's. I still look great dressed up, Mrs Chamataka loves it and says so. She won't say the same if I were wearing the same clothes of a different size coz I was fat

First, go to askandyaboutclothes.com and go to the forum. They are mens clothing divas over there. Use the search function, and you will find posts pertaining to shoe brands and quality. However. use some sense, as Allen Edmonds is considered an "entry level" shoe, while bench-made English shoes such as Barker Black or Edward Green are the norm. Kenneth Cole is a detested brand for its low, low quality and styling. Not to digress, but the English shoes begin at $400, so let's not consider them.

Interesting fact: Allen Edmonds as a matter of tradition has furnished the President with a pair of Park Avenue shoes for his inauguration.

Avoid square toed shoes. They scream "waiter" and "cheap." Notice that they are exclusively found in cheap, mass-market brands. No businessman or professional will wear them. Also, go for leather upper and leather soled shoes. Avoid patent leather.

Nordstrom Rack, Nieman Marcus Last Call, and Saks Off 5th are outlet stores of their mainline counterparts. These are your friends. You can find Cole Haan/Johnston & Murphy for $50-125. Italian-made shoes at Saks Off 5th go for $170. Allen Edmonds shoes tend to fall somewhere around $150-200. Florsheim and Hugo Boss shoes are also quite affordable. You might be lucky and find an Alden shoe (made in US, better than Allen Edmonds).

If you insist on paying $175+, I suggest Nordstrom, as their prices will be the most reasonable of the three (Saks, Nord, NM) and their customer service is LEGENDARY. Nieman Marcus is ok as well in the customer service department, but they are known as "Needless Markup" for a reason. If something goes wrong with your shoes (or anything), you can return your item to Nordstrom within a year and they will replace or refund it, no questions asked, ie, the shoe fell apart or suffered an unreasonable amount of damage. That is why I buy my suits and expensive items there, as I want that sort of gold-plated, iron-clad guarantee.

Oh please, Chamy. You're going to lump everyone who works in the corporate world into one big lumpy mess? Ever been in L.A.? There are honchos there that have their own trainers. Sheesh. Stereotype much?

Thats why I posted the question. Been told by more than one person that shoes are an important part of your 'look'.

Made the mistake of getting some square or box toe shoes. They were for going out on the town. My lady friend at the time said they were a good thing to have. I see them now and think...I may as well have been wearing an Affliction shirt.

Anyhow I just got my KC's polished up since I didn't have time to break a new pair in and I didn't want to slip in them. Got call two days later that an offer was forthcoming.
