That's what, 5%...maybe 10% of the population at the very most?

I was absolutely stunned to learn that Caroll O'Connor was 47 when "All in the Family" first aired. He looked at least 60 by today's standards.

The Brady Bunch first aired in 1969, making Florence Henderson (Carol) about 35 and Ann Davis (Alice) about 43. Compare how they looked then to Katherine Heigl and Kate Walsh now. Kate Walsh is older than Alice was.

It's the fashion and hairstyles.

That's true. I've got a picture of my grandparents at my parents' wedding in 1960, and while both were 50 years old they looked like little old people. George Clooney and Michelle Pfieffer are over 50 and don't look like little old people at all.

I think another factor at play is that people of 2 or 3 generations ago aged quicker because everyone smoked everywhere all day. They smoked in the car on the way to work, they smoked at their desk at work, they smoked in the car on way home, they smoked after dinner, etc. I went to college in 1992 and was floored to learn that the campus had just banned smoking in the classroom hallways 2 years prior and had banned smoking in the classrooms themselves less than 10 years prior. It never occurred to me that students would be allowed to smoke during class in any era, much less one in such recent memory.

It seems that people are either taking better care of themselves now, or they're taking advantage of the cosmetic procedures that are out there.

Mind you, I still see a lot of people who age gracefully or who let themselves go, but the number of 'older' people who still look young is pretty staggering.
