Disclaimer: To preempt 'price' flamewars, I know some wouldn't spend $100 on jeans, but I wouldn't spend $15,000 on redoing a kitchen either. It's all relative, so to each their own!
1. My first issue is on jeans. I'm in the market for jeans, just bought some Diesel jeans on Yoox and they were incredibly tight. Almost looked like spandex tights. Funny thing is I got my true waist size, but the thighs. Anyway, it's 98% cotton/2% spandex, is it uncommon for men to go up two sizes? I have a running back athletic build. I wear 34w usually. Size 40 slim suits. etc. For ultra-slim dress pants I might size up to a 36.
I don't like baggy jeans, but I don't like the behind-hugging look either, I'm kind of trying to thread a fine line here.
Alternative is to buy a pair of Nudie jeans, but I don't know if they run more true to size than diesels.
2. 2nd issue is how well do mall store brands last and wear? Gap, Guess or H&M. Can they be dressed up and dressed down too?
Jean sizing is a crapshoot... even within the same brand, the same waist size will fit differently depending on the cut & weight/stiffness of the denim fabric. My friend actually bought 3 pairs of the same RRL slim straight jeans 2 yrs ago because he was scared they would discontinue the model and he wouldn't be able to find a similar jean again. My suggestion is to actually go into each store and try them on. It's a huge pain and this kind of hands-on shopping turns off a lot of guys but it's the only way you're going to know what fits & what doesn't.
If you have to shop online try to find denim with a higher rise (10 inches+) to accommodate your larger butt & thighs. And avoid raw selvedge jeans since they're actually designed to fit skin-tight & stretch as you wear them, with the idea that they'll naturally crease & fade to conform to your body. Sounds wonderful, but as any guy who's a denim-head knows that these jeans are stiff & ball-busting tight for the 1st few months. It's really masochistic.
And to answer your 2nd question, unless you're buying skinny jeans (which are prone to blowouts at the seams) or doing manual labor on work sites, your denim can last you years. Most of my jeans have met their demise by having their pockets rip from overstuffing. With bigger & bigger cellphones this will be an increasing problem. And Gap & Guess use decent weight denim... H&M cloth however is very thin & delicate. And if you want to dress up denim for biz casual, make sure you choose very dark washes like black or dark navy; fades & stonewashed effects aren't dressy or professional.
I think Diesel jeans are oversized compared to other Europeans brands. I wear W30 and have to buy 31 or 32 if shopping for other brands (H&M, Zara, Acne, Levi's).

1- they cut those strait and slim for skinny legs. Not athletic ones.
2- If you want something like what you describe I suggest trying these:
levi's 511 and go up 1 size - they are skinny jeans but cut a little wider than diesel
If that is still too skinny:
levi's 513 - try your size and up one size. Slim cut but not skinny.
If that is STILL too skinny:
levi's 501 original or 501 shrink to fit. Its a strait cut.
Try your size and up a size. (down a size if your size is too roomy of course unless its the shrink to fit, the shrink to fit loses more room in the wash than the classics)
Depending on the finish will determine if you can dress it up or down.
I always follow a 0.74/0.52 cm rule. If I am provided with a degree of freedom equal to 0.72 cm around my hip, and 0.54 cm across my legs, then those pair of jeans fit me well. I am an engineer and like to do things in a technical manner by setting up numeric standards .
