Quality Mens T-Shirt Recommendations (light, brands, afford, thin)

Why are mens's t-shirts sold in department and discount stores these days so lightweight, poorly cut, and with thin collars? The only brand I have found that's substantial is Hanes Beefy-t (even it has declined somewhat in quality from a decade ago) and the only affordable place to acquire these t-shirts are at thrift stores. What are some other good quality, yet affordable t-shirt brands?
