Well. There's a time and a place to "just be you", and the Oscars is a formal event, always has been always will be. Showing up wearing your everyday gear is disrespectful and conveys the message that you don't really give a damn.

How about next time she's nominated they don't invite her to the event, and they have someone else accept an award on her behalf?
Every occasion isn't necessarily the right one for you to decide to send the message that you don't really give a damn. And yeah, I get it, she really doesn't "give a damn".
Also, don't forget, she's a costume designer, don't ever confuse that with working in the "fashion industry" because it's not the same thing - as for "her sense of style" it's a zero on a zero scale and that's not my opinion it's a fact.
Agreed.
When did the "I don't give a damn" attitude suddenly become something to be admired and proud of instead of disrespectful, which it's often is. Would it be okay to look like you don't give a damn at a wedding, funeral, job interview, dress-code event?
I find it depends on the person's status. A famous/talented/ whatever person can get away with looking like they don't give a damn and everyone will applaud their "confidence", whereas if the same is done by, say, a young college student they would be vilified as those disrespectful kids nowadays, can't be bothered. Double standard imo. Like the emperor's new clothes.
Seriously.
And how is side-boob fitting for an "important function"?
How is it *formal*?
...and those "dresses" that are nothing more than bras and panties (or close to it) covered with long lace or netting. Not exactly formal or classy.
