My grandmother had a small bottle. I kind've wished I saved it when going through her things. Smelled lovely on her, but haven't tried it on myself. Definitely a classic I may try/invest in.
I have one fragrance that is made epecially for me and I do not wear it often.
Too many people in public are allergic to fragrance others wear and I am one of those and I am usually miserable when I have to be out in public.

I remember it being hugely popular in the 80s. I also wore Cinnabar, which was a similar fragrance to Opium.
I haven't smelled either in years. I imagine they would seem very dated today. Very heavy oriental fragrances.
As far as the newer version, I haven't tried it.

I have hard time picturing that Opium would smell bad on ANYONE.
But I hear you, it seems that quite a few ppl associate Opium with their older folks - mostly mothers, ( and in your case even grandmother.)
I had a nearly full bottle that I recently sold on eBay. It was a huge bottle too. Definitely had a distinctive smell. I'm more of a Dior woman myself.

How can a perfume that's so complex and sophisticated as original Opium, be "dated," comparably to more contemporary perfumes that smell like bunch of chemicals?
The problem is, once L'Oreal bought YSL, they literally butchered the original Opium and now, instead of 10 notes that used to be in the original one, new Opium has basically one ( or two) notes, and even that one smells like plastic. Plus no silage whatsoever - it's pathetic))))
What I am trying to figure out though ( with the help of those who ever used this perfume,) is the difference between the 80ies version with the 200ies version(s,) because I know there was a difference already)))

I wore Opium in the 80's. It smells very nice but would be a bit heavy for me now.
Why not now? What changed in you, that it was OK back then, but NOW it would be "a bit heavy?"
