If you do, we would like to hear what and why.
All the time since I do not follow *rules* established by snobby *experts* who have no clue what fashion really is.

First, my condolences to you.

When a close family friend passed away (about 8 years ago), most of us wore purple and green to his memorial - as those were his favorite colors, and he was NOT a "funereal black" kind of guy! Always danced to the beat of his own drum, so we knew he would have appreciated that.

No longer working but when I did I tried to look professional at my job as City Clerk. I like to look nicely dressed . Mostly though my dressing up is a pretty blouse/shirt with black jeans in winter or bulky pull over sweater. Summer I liked to wear sun dresses to work and meetings. Usually with one of those shrug sweaters. There was no dress code and the clerk before me wore old jeans and sweatshirt. I was not that casual. But the office was in an old building and freezing in there in winter so I also had to consider trying to stay warm. The heater did not work well and it took half the day to warm the place up.

As I said on another thread here. Home is yoga pants and T-shirt in summer or bulky sweater in winter. And some times sun dresses if I am not working in the yard that day. So I am still not sure I am breaking the rules.

Since I live in Florida I never follow the "no white after Labor Day" rule. Even when I lived on Long Island I would wear what they called "winter white". Had boots, a winter coat and wool skirt that color. The no white after Labor Day started up north and at one time it had a practical application, mostly to keep your clothes clean after the snows started and the roads and sidewalks weren't kept up like they do now.

That being said I wouldn't wear pure white jeans or white shoes up north after Labor Day.

Outside of work, I dress however I want, provided it's appropriate to the setting/event, and it's not rude to do so (i.e. I wouldn't wear short shorts and a belly shirt to a wedding because it would be both inappropriate and rudely attention-stealing)
I wouldn't wear the short shorts and belly shirt either, since no one wants to see an older guy who is way overweight in that sort of outfit

My Dads funeral was a grave side service only, in July, in Texas. We wore comfortable clothes, and ties were strictly optional. I think he would have approved, since he almost never wore a tie or a suit after he retired. Heck, he was buried in his favorite guyabara shirt and a pair of shorts.

We have to wear a uniform at work. I wear black shirt and pants. The shirt has our department name on the sleeve.

I think I break the rules every few years at a traditional gathering I'm invited to. I have an item that doesn't meet an arcane requirement, but I like it and it's hard to tell it's against the rules. I have an issue with that gathering in general - I don't believe in some elements of it.

Also, almost every time in life I've felt it necessary to wear suit, I have not worn a belt. It feels like an encumbrance and pants can stay up without one. Nobody should be checking to see if I'm wearing a belt anyway.

If age-appropriate is a rule, then maybe other week. I have some items that are too young for me and I like variety, messing around, and using I what have; so sometimes when I'm not interacting with people who matter, I'll go out looking (I think) much younger than I am. Enjoy it while I can.

'round here, "formal dress" is Aloha wear; a Hawaiian-print dress for women, a Hawaiian shirt and slacks for men. "Informal" is Aloha shirt and shorts for men, a dress for women. Every day wear ranges from swim suits (tourists) to sarongs (or lavalavas for men), to cutoffs, tank tops, or whateva.

Slippahs (thongs, flip-flops) are worn all the time. You take them off when you go into someone's home.

It's really hard to break those "rules", but I like to dress up sometimes--print cotton pants or blouse, a little jewelry. Kind of makes me stand out.
