I've had to go up a half a size at the age of 45 or so and maybe will go up another half, depending on the type of shoes. Sandals and mules can be more forgiving, pumps and especially pointy-toed shoes not forgiving at all.
You can try getting some of your shoes stretched if they're just a little tight, otherwise just start SLOWLY replacing the ones in the styles you wear most, keeping in mind never to buy them snug to start with or you could end up in the same place you are now in just a few more years.
And do try ebay. I know some people are squicked out at the idea of used shoes but you can find some really good shoes and many are barely worn (you know how some women are!).
I'm 66 and have been wearing the same size shoe since I was a teenager.
I'm not 66 yet but 51 and same. I wore a size 6 since middle school. I honestly WISH they would get bigger so it would be easier to find shoes; nobody seems to have a decent selection of shoes in sizes under an 8 around here
Yes, but it happens gradually. You don't have to get all new shoes overnight. I suppose if you can afford a ton of shoes, you can afford new ones. Most people aren't wearing shoes from twenty years ago, anyway.
Actually, even though my size has gone up a bit for new shoes, I do have some loafer-style shoes from 20 years ago that I wear! I've gotten them re-heeled, some re-soled but they were great shoes and in great styles that have stood the test of time....you have to buy the classics.
My feet have gotten huge. I cannot wear a lot of my shoes anymore. I should have owned 5 pairs max. I own about 20. And no more Payless to buy cheap shoes either. Sigh.
Shop for shoes at Goodwill or other thrift stores. Personally, for me, I don't have a problem buying second hand shoes, if I see something I like. But some people do, and I can understand that. But buying shoes for $3 or $4 as opposed to $20+...eh, why not?
I totally agree.
I am a shoe afficianado or however you spell it. But a few years ago I had to have both Achilles tendons surgically repaired (long story and it sucks). That was when I found out I could only wear "good" (aka "expensive") shoes like Born, SSoft, etc. Dang it, I had a closet full of high heels and strappy sandals from PayLess! LOL
Over time I replaced my cheapo shoes with good quality ones from resale shops or eBay.
I found that a quick spray of a disinfectant inside made me feel fine about the whole thing.

I have heard, although I don't know how true it is, that you need to be careful about second hand shoes and wear patterns. That sometimes worn sole patterns can actually affect your own gait in negative ways. Have you ever noticed any adverse affects? Just wondering if there's any truth to what I heard.
And yes, my shoe size has gone up by a whole size with aging and weight gain.
while feet do grow during the aging process, it won't happen that quickly and you're shoes will probably need replacement by then. however, feet also grow as a result of pregnancy. i had a magnificent collection of shoes (moschino, gucci, blahniks...) all in size 7.5 M. it only took two years and 2 babies to morph my feet into a whopping size 9.
and in case you are wondering, no. even the most talented cobbler will be unable to stretch a shoe THAT much.
