When I was a child I used to have to zip up my mother's dresses in the back for her, and I never understood why a dress would be made that way that the person wearing it couldn't put it on themselves, but a friend who's a costumer pointed out that women who wore fine clothes in the past had maids to help them dress. Thankfully, I have never even seen a dress for sale that zips up the back, though I imagine they're still out there if you shop very high end fashion these days.

One of the lifeguards at our local pool has a wetsuit which has a zipper up the back. It has a long string on it that he uses to pull it up and down. Probably not exactly high fashion, though.
