I wore a 6-8 all through high school. I'm 47 years old now, and I wear between a 2-5 depending on manufacturer. I also weigh about 8-10 pounds more than I did when I was in high school. So yes, sizes have been "vanitized".

I thought it was funny that I was considered a 'plus size model' when I did a little bit of modeling a few years ago. I'm 6'1 and at the time a size 12. The size 12's are a bit baggy on me now (woohoo playing tennis!) but I think it really depends on your height and build. My 4'11 ex roommate looked a tad different in size 12 jeans than I did

Over several decades yes, but I disagree that they have been seriously "vanitized" since the early 1990s because as I said before the 6s I had in high school fit as well as a 6 does today, taking into account the different styles (high-waisted pants then as opposed to low-rise ones today). I also weigh more than I did in high school, but it is possible to weigh more than you did in HS and still fit into your HS clothes because you have not achieved full bone density yet as a teenager, so it is possible to weigh more as an adult yet still have the same measurements.

To the poster who said a 10 is an L or XL in Europe...a size 10/12 is an L in the US too. 6/8 is M. 10 is about average these days for a lot of western European countries. Some European countries are almost as obese as the United States is, so their "average" size is climbing too.

Plus size is 20 and up.

16 to 20 is large

below is average unless it is way to small then it is anorexic.

I use to be a size 16 and was never thought of a fat by normal people.

I wore a 10/12 all through high school (early 70's), and weighed about 130/135.
IMHO, I was chubby back then, but not plus-sized.

I weigh a good 15 pounds less than that now, and wear anywhere between a 4 and a 10!
I have given up on sizes being uniform. A size 6 at one place is a 10 some place else. I try on everything, esp bathing suits.

Our bodies 'shift' a bit as we age, too.
My breasts are not exactly in the same spot they were when I was 18.

If you're trying to model yes you would considered plus sized! In the REAL WORLD, of course not!

I was just wondering if size 10 is considered plus-size?

It doesn't matter to me. I love my curves and am healthy. I just love that magazines are now showing more plus-sized models.

Thanks,

It depends on the manufacturer. Any juniors clothing, no, 10 is not plus sized. But any manufacturer that makes women's clothes, yes, I think a 10 is plus sized.

I wear an 8/9 depending on the cut in juniors/young adult fashions, but if I try to wear anything Ann Taylor in less than a 4/6 it falls right off. A ten seems gigantic. Forget about Old Navy...it's like a parachute. They're awful about vanity sizing.

But it doesn't really matter, as long as you're comfortable in your size.

Linda Jo I am a size 9-10 in pants/jeans, an 8 in nice dresses, and have been since high school, due to my curvy thighs and rear. I used to be a size 6 waist, but 4 kids later, the waist fits the 10 jeans as well. I feel good about my size. I work out some, eat lo carb and at 5'6" I have a pretty nice figure. I struggled to be a 4-6 for a few years but for my frame, everyone tells me I look better at size 8-10. everyone is different, but if you are in proportion and think you look good, you probably do!
Also, I believe that some women can't get too thin as they get older- I am one of them, my face gets gaunt. I would rather be a curvy 41 yr old who looks younger than a really skinny woman with a sunken face. I think its too bad that models have to be either a size 0-4 or a 14 plus size model. Where are the beautiful fashion models for women size 8-12? I guess we are supposed to be striving to be size 4 and the plus size girls are supposed to be fat n happy. I am happy at a size 10.

well most models today are like 6'1" and a size 2, lol. Size 12 is perfect for someone your height. Size is relative to height. I'm a size 2...but I am only 5'1". I would look realllly emaciated if I was as tall as you and a size 2.
