I once saw a lady in Wal-Mart shopping in her bathrobe !
I'm turning 58 tomorrow and I still wear sweatpants out and about but there are limits. I would wear them to Wal-Mart or Taco Bell but wouldn't consider wearing them in a decent restaurant or a shopping mall with nice stores.
(Since it's my birthday tomorrow here is my birthday wish list; new car, new computer, new roof, new back, new neck and new knees !)
Oh I forgot, I need a new pair of sweats too !
I'm not a guy, but when I get up at 6 a.m. and walk my dog, I don't ever do it in anything other than sweat pants, knit yoga style pants, or anything else soft, flexible, and comfortable to move around in. Most of the time I'm relaxing at home or doing chores or housework, running errands, I'm wearing the same. It's not a fashion choice, it's a comfort choice. Do I pretend that athletic pants are fashionable? Do I wear them out in public for anything other than a utilitarian errand? No. They serve a different purpose. My SO, a 30-year old male, does the same, except that he pretty much exclusively wears nylon running pants when at home (which he runs in).
Don't fall into the trap of caring what other people think about your pants. They are just pants.
I have one pair of sweat pants. I don't know if I've ever worn them out of the general vicinity of my house.
I'm still kind of a slob. My two favorite pairs of pants I bought for $5 a piece over 6 years ago. There isn't a tie, long-sleeved button up shirt, pair of dress paints, or shoe without a lace on it anywhere in my closet. Yet, I have a wonderful girlfriend, friends, family, and a great life.

It's just pants dude
It's not just pants though. People are constantly being judged by their appearances. I look at people in sweats and think "oh my god are they really that lazy?". Maybe you don't care what others think about you, but believe me...people are thinking and judging.
Sophialee - Yes they still do have the sweatpants with the elastic ankles and strings around the waist (though my sweatshirt usually covers them). These type of sweatpants are the kind I wear. They are clean, not form-fitting and solid color. You can find them in Wal-Mart or K-Mart.
Anyway, I wear my sweatpants around the house, to my morning jolt at Starbucks, casual dinners. I know enough NOT to wear them on dates, fancy restaurants nor weddings. On those situations I dress more formally. However, I just wanted to know if other 30 year olds wear sweatpants around the house or other casual settings. I just do not want people talking about me behind my back.
casual dinners? ack, no, please don't! And the elastic at the bottom? Yikes! At least go get a pair of breakways from Adidas or something...or something a little nicer, like American Eagle...instead of K-mart/Walmart.

Another thing for the OP to consider.
Anyone who judges you on your pants, is that a person who you really care what they think? And I use that last word very loosely.
Do you want to wear sweat pants out because you are 'lazy'? And even if that answer is yes, does that laziness carry over to any other part of your life or just your frickin' pants
