I am considering retiring in NWA. I am looking for a place with great natural beauty as I am tired of the big city (DFW). I want to learn to fish and I love to shot my various weapons so I need access to a local
rifle range. My wife is disabled and access to health care is very important so we can not be very far from a good hospital with specialist. I would appreciate your help with this search.

There are areas here that would be perfect for you, we lived in the DFW area for about 13 years and now call Bella Vista our home.

Everything you want you can get here in BV, but you would want to stay close to highway 71. Our only big compalint about where we live (the Highlands area) is access to 71 and medical facilities etc. We are 20 minutes just to 71. From there many outstanding doctors and the hospitals are only a few minutes away.

We have some good grocery stores here, a rifle range and lots of fishing. Plus activities for seniors as well as families. The area used to be simply a retirement community, but this is changing, which is good, not bad. It is still mostly seniors though.

There are other areas in NWA that would come close to meeting you needs, but some might be a little to conjested for you and others not close enough for good medical care. I would also consider places like parts of Rogers for starters. Of course remember, coming from DFW area, the worst traffic here might not seem like much of anything. We lived in Lewisville and I commuted to Carrolton for work, it was not many miles, but the traffic was awful. After I retired I worked part time in Southlake, again, short commute, but bumper to bumper traffic.

I have noticed you are looking in Ft Worth, and mentioned Tyler. I think you will find the people here in NWA very friendly, there are lots of senior activities and the housing market is much lower. You can find a really nice 1500 sq ft house for around 135,000 to $150,000 here in Bella Vista. In fact there is one for sale behind our house, the next street over and the beauty of all or trees makes living here almost like living in the forest.

I was hoping to learn to fish and get some shooting in when I moved here also. the shooting range in Bella Vista is for BV residents only. I've been there a few times with my friend who is a BV property owner. There is another public shooting range in Hobbs state park that I've yet to visit. I've read mixed results about that place and being the only public range in the area, the lines can get long.

Lots of gun owners here. I think a good portion of the residents are either carrying concealed or keep something in their car. I'm pretty sure folks living in the rural parts with larger properties just have a private range in their backyard they use for shooting.

I have also used the BV lakes for fishing and I have yet to catch anything even though everyone around me catch fish all day long. I guess maybe I'm not a fisherman.

BV has a bunch of lakes as well as a bunch of golf courses, I think it's a great place to retire as well as other parts of NWA as long as the colder winter weather is ok for you (compared to Texas).

Sounds like we should partner up and open a gun range that is open to all! Seriously though I was hoping there were more options as far as gun ranges. I guess I will just need to make some Bella Vista friends! To the OP you will find plenty of fishing options I am sure. I visited NWA over Thanksgiving break and was very happy at the many outdoor areas.

Holiday Island is a good place to look and might work for the OP, but he wants to be really close to medical care, that would be a drawback. This is why I suggested staying close to highway 71; it is much more convenient to the good specialists and the hospitals.

Default Bella Vista Distance from health care and shopping

I want to thank everyone for the answers to my initial question. My new question is if I bought a house close to Hy. 71, how long would it take to get to a hospital. Also the approximate distance/time to Bentonville and Fayetteville. I would also appreciate opinions on the social situation there and how hard it is to make new friendships. Since we know no one in NWA this is very important.

Thanks Again!
DJ

We found it really easy to make friends here. That might have something to do with being involved socially with people associated with the university. There is a really active community in Fayetteville. We've met people through events at the Botanical Gardens and at the farmer's market. I find people in Fayetteville to be very open and friendly. Its still a pretty small town.

It depends where along 71 your house was located as far as the distance to the nearest hospital.

Bentonville and Fayetteville are about 25 minutes apart.

Sounds sorta strange to me I thought everyone knew how to fish and shoot. I forget not everyone grows up doing it. If I want to shoot I just drive anywhere outside of town or to some friends or family's property and shoot. I don't think you really need to go to a proper gun range. As far as fishing check out table rock lake not that far from Nwa metro and an awesome lake to fish!

That's kinda true. Once I expressed an interest in hunting and shooting, I had several offers from people with rural land who were more than happy to let me use their property for shooting and hunting.
