I'm a 39 year old single guy looking for a fall/winter/spring location. I would live in Portland or Seattle in summers. My job is via the Internet so employment isn't the issue. Big college basketball fan, like the outdoors, golf. I want to buy a craftsman style house close to town. I currently have live in Cali. for 20 years and I'm looking for more affordable housing + outdoors + a mid sized town with character and a progressive feel

Has anyone spent time in Athens GA and Fayetteville AR? Can you give me opinions of both?

Thanks!

I have been to both and I much prefer Athens. Both are great college towns. However, while Fayetteville is a mixture of College town and city, Athens is a pure college town and it is absolutely beautiful there. I am not sure of the population numbers but it seems that Athens is bigger but I can't say for sure. YOu should actually go and see both because I can't say as to what you would like, but I like the neighborhoods in Athens better. They are a lot older. Athens is very old University town.

Thanks for the reply hotair2. Athens has milder winters and it's not as isolated being an hour from Atlanta, so that is a plus. I'm guessing both are fairly low home prices?

Actually no. Fayetteville's home prices are lower than Athens. I believe there are more students in Athens and there is a big demand for housing.

As far as college basketball goes, Hogs > Dawgs.

That is absolutely the best reason. SEC Championship is Georgia Dome. Being closer to Atlanta is the reason I would pick Athens.

I assume this is a put down. Which are you putting down, Athens or Fayetteville? Why?

Merely an observation.

Fayetteville is the best overlooked college town in America. I've never been to Athens GA. I'm sure it's a fine town.
