Always fascinates how we all gravitate to specific kinds of 'art'. Personally, I'm always in wonderment say in seeing the technical virtuosity of various paintings. One can come away stunned in the achievement. On the other hand I really believe 'abstract' art cuts more to the chase of how art communicates. I think the shapes and forms that the artist develops in the work does afford the viewer to direct their appreciation of it in such a way that 'meaning' resides in the viewer. The mere act of seeing makes a viewer very 'active' in trying to come to grips with the art since it's amorphous and not identifiable as being directly in the world.
