An acquaintance recently commented, "Sedona is in transition from a New Age town to a bicycle tourism town."

What's up with that? Can you tell me more?

Thanks.

I think that person means, it's turning into a Berkeley, CA or Boulder, CO type of city mentality. For the rich, elite, and pretentious.

Sedona is becoming known as a top mountain biking destination, and lots of bikers are now coming to visit the area. I don't know if the new age stuff is declining any since I don't pay attention to it, but it has been rated as a top mountain biking destination for several years. At the same time, more trails have been created/opened and this boosts it's attraction even more.

Thanks. I did some research and saw there are a lot of bike rental and bike tour companies there now. From what I hear some of the residents are frustrated with this increase in traffic.

We are looking to rent a house in Sedona for six months in the fall and winter, so I'm curious to see how difficult it might be to get around.

It won't be difficult to get around due to bicycles. It's the car traffic that's become Phoenix-like. The bikers are here for sure, but they're not replacing the newagers, not by a long shot.

I don't think it means that at all. Mountain bikers are a totally different lot than the biking community in Berkeley, trust me. Sedona is a huge mountain bike draw, much like Moab is a draw for off-roaders AND mountain bikers. There are a lot of videos floating around on MTB sites showing some crazy technical trails in Sedona like Hangover, White Crack, etc., and it's starting to garner the attention of the MTB community. I was surprised myself when I saw very little in the way of MTB shops and crowds in Sedona when I first rode out there 7 years ago. Sedona Bike and Bean and one bike shop in VOC were the only games in town back then. Mountain bikers are down-to-earth, friendly groups who aren't an issue. I'd rather visit a town full of MTB'ers than a town full of incense-scented hippies wearing dresses. Spandex over tie dye!

This is absolutely correct. There are abundant bike lanes, trails, and side streets to ride in without hindering traffic in Sedona. Outside of town the roads aren't as wide but there isn't as much traffic to worry about when passing. The biggest issue with traffic is still cars and visitors that think roundabouts are stop signs and roads can double as parking lots when there is a good picture-taking opportunity.

Stop the nonsense now and turn Sedona into a national park. Enough already.

I was in Sedona for three days at the end of August and had no trouble getting about. I may have missed most of the summer tourist trade.

My acrophobia got triggered driving up Airport Mesa. That's where most of the tourists were, at the top viewing area near Sky Ranch Lodge. They would wander out onto the road without looking where they were going.

Some of the new age book stores have gone out of business there over the last five years or so, even though I'm a Christian and had some negative pre-Christian experiences with this type of stuff it still makes me a little sad. I enjoyed looking at some of the books and talking with the people who worked in the places. Obviously we had our differences but they were nice. There is still one place that is pretty dark IMHO that sells new age stuff and does aura readings and all of that. I forget the name of it but it is a creepy place. The new agers are still in Sedona but the power of yuppiedom is over running them...at least pushing them to the corners or the elite off the beaten path retreats. I don't think they will ever be completely gone with the "vortexes" and all that being there
