You can help make Flagstaff a better place. Share your ideas in this new thread. This thread inspired from an email that came today (below) from Flagstaff planner Martin Ince, who is recruiting volunteers for bicycling and pedestrian counts. Sounds like fun and I wish I was still there for this. All the best to Mr. Ince and his volunteers as they improve the FUTS:

We are looking for a few volunteers to help the City of Flagstaff conduct bicycle and pedestrian counts around downtown Flagstaff.

The counts will be done at two locations, Beaver Street at the BNSF tracks, and San Francisco Street at Route 66. A third location, the end of the Rio North FUTS Trail at Birch Street, will be counted by an infrared trail counter. Counts will be done on a weekday over a 6 to 8 hour time period covering the morning peak, lunch rush, and evening peak (the time period can be broken into several slots - one volunteer would not have to cover 6 to 8 hours).

We will use this information in our negotiations with the BNSF railroad for a FUTS bicycle and pedestrian undercrossing of the BNSF tracks at a location somewhere west of Beaver and east of Milton. BNSF has an interest in reducing bicycle and pedestrian collisions on at-grade track crossings, and this information will help us estimate how many cyclists and pedestrians might use the underpass as an alternate to crossing the tracks at Beaver or San Francisco. If we can provide them with good information, BNSF is likely to be favorable to our request for a FUTS underpass.

We will provide count forms and clipboards and basic instruction. Experience not necessary. Any time you can provide is very much appreciated.

Let me know if you can help. Thanks!
