Default Sales and use tax on rentals

Does anyone actually pay the sales tax on short term home rentals? Looking for advice on how/when, etc. Is it 6% or 11.5%? Am I opening up a can of worms when I register with the FL department of Revenue?

The sales tax depends on the locality.

The rates can be anywhere between .25% and 2.5%. So people will have a sales tax rate between 6% and it could be as high as 8.5%, but that's a discretionary sales surtax that will differentiate that.

Now, some localities have an additional transient/tourist rental tax.

In Osceola County FL (Right near Walt Disney), the Tourist development tax (or bed rental, resort tax) is 6%.

But the county also has a 1% discretionary tax.

So 13% is the amount added to any rentals in Osceola county.
