Texting driver causes 6-car pileup on Florida highway
The Associated Press

Police say a man who was "messed up" on medication and texting while driving caused a six-vehicle pileup on U.S. 192 in Melbourne.

The pickup driven by 27-year-old Brigham Reed Clark crashed into a Chrysler PT Cruiser about 4 p.m. Tuesday, starting a chain-reaction pileup. Seven people were injured and the highway was closed for more than two hours.

Florida Highway Patrol spokesman Channing Taylor says Clark was charged with driving under the influence.

Taylor says Clark had taken some "serious" medication before the accident.

The accident report indicated Clark looked down to text and when he looked up, he hit the PT Cruiser.

What is it going to take to pass a law prohibiting texting in cars, etc ? I drive the I-4 stretch between Tampa-Orlando 2-3 times week and it never ceases to amaze me to see someone driving 80 mph in the left hand lane, texting with both hands, and steering with his/her/legs. Is it really that important that a text be sent while moving ?

Passing a law against it won't help. They did that here in TN and people still do it. The sad fact is, people somehow think that their text, or phone call is so important that putting themselves and others in danger just doesn't matter. I simply don't understand at all. I see people on my commute at 6:30 in the morning with a cell phone in their ear (propped on their shoulder) drinking coffee out of their travel mug, going 75+ miles an hour. Who in the world could they possibly be talking to (or texting)? Common sense isn't so common...

It has helped in NJ and NY. It shouldn't be just texting though, it should be any cell phone usage without a hands free device, and even then it's risky since the driver isn't completely focused on the road.
