Every move, no matter where in the country is absolutely starting over. People are leaving families, friends, familiar places and uprooting children. It is most certainly a new life anytime Those of us who can actually bring a little bit more money with them from their previous locations are very fortunate.
Those of you trying to move, like I am, do not give up. You can and will find a place in Florida. Everyone should basically be understanding what their range of skills really are and market themselves but some can't help it if there's no demand right now for their occupation. It's no secret to smart job-seekers that the employment opportunities suck right now but with determination you will all find something. This market is not the worst we've ever seen!?! People are hiring.... Just prioritize what your needs are and don't be afraid to try something different if it truly fits you. The state will be fortunate to have you and your future support to assist all who will most certainly be following in your footsteps
I think you glossed over his point.... Yes, whenever you move to another state you are "starting over" to some extent. RMD's point was that SOME states are a bit more forgiving when you move down without much of a plan and no job, and right now Florida is one of the LEAST forgiving in that respect...... (Higher unemployment rate, etc...).

I don't think anyone's trying to squash the dream, but just make people understand that if they move down to Florida with a half-arsed plan thinking things will just happen for them they may be in for a rude awakening.....

RB-That is exactly my point. Thanks.

ZZB-I appreciate what you are saying. We have very limited info from the poster to go on, so assumptions are being made. We get many posts like the one we are talking about here, especially in the winter. They all have some common traits: move anywhere (in FL), no family, no jobs or job skills, no money. They want high paying jobs, good schools, good but cheap housing, low crime, and (usually) close to the beach. They want to "start over", "fresh start", "cleanse my soul", "feel the warmth of the sunshine".

Folks pack up and move here anyway, despite a chorus of "don't do it" from those who live here. They use phrases like "I'm stepping out on faith" and "moving on a whim".

Then they get here. They are shocked to find out that $10/hour is good pay. They can't understand why they can't find a $20/hour job like they had in the NE. Housing (although cheap now) is outrageous compared to the payscales and cost of living. Throw in the lousy school system and no family support. Suddenly the dream evaporates. They aren't going to the beach everyday like they dreamed about.

My little scenario was based on the boom times. Now? Forget it.

ZZB-I follow your other thread. You are doing it right by researching, patience etc. Maybe ssnow will be the same way, but based on the few sentences they posted, it has the ominous tone of many before them.

Hopefully they will post back with their progress.

Yes there are many people out there who don't seem to have a clue about how to do this properly and are simply living for the dream. Those people need a reality check. Our country has way too many people with a "please me" attitude and I think that's where it comes from.
I don't like entitlement personalities myself. It's the same reason why I hate liberal politics these days... you guys are doing a good service by warning people of the possiblities.

And thank you RMD3819 for your compliment...

I'm ending on a note resounding my intention to all forum readers... if you have what it takes (and I mean truly have what it takes) to get to Florida and make those dreams come true, it can happen. If you choose the foolish path of letting the wind carry you through life without a foundation then you have earned the consequence of being swept away with the next hurricane (be it economic, emotional, atmospheric or whatever...)
It's sad to hear from long-time members that the reputations of many typical posters end up being of this persuasion so don't fall into that trap! Do be specific with your comments on this site in order to credit yourselves. Good luck.

I think regardless where one moves they need to have a savings that if something happens like a health problem, car, job issues that they can live for a time without working. You never know what may happen in life and usually it happens at a bad time.

This is so true, I gave you a rep point. People want to have it all with a cherry on top, and then get mad when the state can't live up to their insane expectations. Then they often lash out and blame others for problems they brought on themselves. Everyone is responsible for their issues except the "man in the mirror" (to quote the late, great Michael Jackson)
