It took us longer than we figured, but we finally moved from New Mexico and have been in South Daytona for 7 months now. We like it a lot. New Smyrna was a bit too remote (we bike and ride buses, no autos), Port Orange too conservative, and Ormond too Snowbirdie Boy, it's been a hot summer so far! We arrived just before Christmas, and the weather was perfect for several months. Sweltering summers aren't so bad when you know that the fall, spring (what there is of it) and winter are lovely. It's amazing how different each little town is out here, even though they're right next to each other.

I know from lots of experience that 7 months isn't enough time to really understand an area, yet I can't see ever leaving. Besides, moving the wife, the cat, and all our stuff was such a huge deal! Wow, it was the most complicated and expensive move of my life getting us all out here from New Mexico. I often wish there was a real coffeehouse (Marlay's is nice, but not my idea of a coffeehouse) and SOME sort of art scene ) nada, nothing, full stop), but miles and miles of sand and water, incredible wildlife, and affordable living make up for it. Most of the towns that are more "happening" are great to bop in and out of, but not where I'd want to live anyway.
We are looking to purchase a house in the Palm Harbor Estates area of South Daytona. Do have any thoughts on that area?

I don't get it either, but to each their own.....Interestingly enough they lament a lack of an art scene and just up the coast is St Augustine which shares the same geography and a much better cultural scene than Daytona Beach in my opinion, without all of the riff-raff. Oh well...
