OK. Dumb question number....blah blah. But seriously, when you compare prices of homes, even in cold climates, Florida appears to be far more reasonable. Never been to Florida, we are just researching it as a place to move to for that reason.

Homes built on slabs, cookie-cutter design, very small lots, home are close together as if they were built in an assembly line process - quality and design are unimagintive, imo. I don't think you get as much for your money as you would in nearby states such as Georgia, South Carolina......for the money, you can buy some really nice places -

You will find those cookie cutter designs, very small lots, zero lot lines or not much better in a lot of the newer subdivisions.

Outside of the subdivisons and away from the city(any city) it is all the opposite.

I just bought a home in a prestigious area of Sarasota for half of what it cost the owner to build it just a couple of years ago.

He was able to take a hit because the company he worked for is paying the difference of what he owed and what I offered him. He took my first offer without a counter offer.

His company is also paying for his entire move so he had nothing to lose.

The economy since 2009 has sucked for various reasons and many have lost their homes in record numbers. Therefore houses are bought up by investors and flipped for a quick profit.

We are probably going to the worse economic times since Jimmy Carter was President and I dont see us coming out of it anytime soon.

Find a good home in a safe area is not hard to find in Florida. It is not a bad thing either as I was able to grab on heck of a huge home for very cheap.

Florida is a big state. Where are you looking?

Since neither of us has ever been to Florida, we are looking all over. Although seem to have focused on Ormond Beach area and Sebring for some reason. Does't look cookie cutter or zero lot line to us. Any thoughts ??

Been in Florida a long time .... there are plenty of really nice homes at great prices (and, like elsewhere, some 'cookie cutter' developments). The construction is generally as good as anywhere else ... and in some respects better (when considering the storm standards most new Florida construction must meet).

I wonder about the reverse side of this question. When watching HGTV, it looks like small, cramped homes in the Northeast and other areas have HUGE price tags ... compared to Florida homes. Why so high?? --- and how do ordinary working people afford these $700-$800K+ homes?

Perhaps we are both just seeing 'extremes' of the same question(?)

if you're preparing yourself for a bargain priced home, be prepared for high property insurance, possibly a relatively high real estate tax, flood insurance, CDD fees, in addition to possible HOA fees. It might appear that you're looking at relatively inexpensive homes until you learn about these add ons.

Both Ormond Beach and Sebring are small communities far from things, hence why its much cheaper in those areas. Location, Location, Location is the key to price. If you look at homes far from things or in less desirable areas they will be cheaper than homes near major cities or in desirable areas. Northern Florida is much cheaper than Southern Florida too.
