"Brookings associate fellow Jonathan T. Rothwell, who authored the report, said that wasn't surprising given that the region is so focused on the tourism, hospitality and retail economy."

This, along with an overreliance on real estate sales and development, has been South Florida's undoing during past downturns and will be again unless there's a greater degree of economic diversification.

Broward County's leadership is much more focused on appeasing real estate development and tourism/hospitality/travel interests than on attracting vibrant new industries.

And this quote about Miami from the article speaks for itself:

“The bigger problem is that for the last few decades Miami hasn’t done as well in educating its own residents from the beginning of their education up through high school and college,” Rothwell said. “There are some promising signs that is improving but there is still plenty of work to be done.”

DUH? What engineering firm would want to be located anywhere near corrupt Miami-Dade? High costs, excessive regulation, high cost of living, they would have to be nuts. Engineers aren't as stupid as foreign investors in general. There is simply no reason to stuff your company in an overcrowded traffic filled hurricane bait county when there are many other places that would welcome your company with open arms.

I don't know. You might want to ask them:

Your point is?! In order for a state to be successful it has to have a Apple, Google, or Microsoft. Winch two of the three are located in the same state. I don't understand why Florida just cant be Florida a different state from the others... we have what we have, and that is just enough to lure in thousands every year. I am not just saying don't strive to be the best, but what I am saying strive to be the best, but in a different way.

An attitude that tourism and seasonal snowbirds who create ton's of low paying jobs, is Florida's only means and good enough, is not a road paved with gold for the future as what we see here now will not exist in the future...sure there will be people with money but most people in their 40's and below are under different times than their parents, pensions are a rarity, savings at a all time low and etc. These gated communities filled to the gills with brand new Cadillac driving 60 year old retirees who have bottomless bank accounts and take cruises all the time are a dying breed. Based on the trends in South Florida, housing and COL, incomes and the quality of jobs need to rise. The baby boomer economy will not last forever...
