Anyone have recommendation for alternate driving route from Florida to New Jersey ? Looking to avoid the VA/DC/MD section of I-95

Was thinking I-95 till SC, then I-26 to I-77 to I-81 to I-78

Any experience with this ? Much longer or other drawbacks ? Appreciate any feedback or recommendations

If I were you I'd try to plan your trip where you'll go through VA/DC at an off hour to avoid the real bad traffic. If you decide not to do that look into taking I-64 to I-81 in Richmond. Google Maps will tell you which route is fastest.

One possibility might be to leave I-95 at Wilmington and take US 13 along the Delmarva Peninsula to the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel opposite Norfolk.

An alternative would be US 13 to US 301 (leaving 13 near Middletown) then US 50 to cross the Chesapeake south of Baltimore, and US 301 along the Eastern D C suburbs (Waldorf, LaPlata), rejoining I-95 after crossing the Gov. Harry Nice Memorial Bridge at the mouth of the Potomac.

The "suburbanized" section of 301 is not limited-access, and also congested at rush hour, so you might be wise to schedule your plans accordingly.

(I-81 runs via Roanoke, not Richmond, BTW, but continuing South on either I-77 or US 220 will eventually lead to the I-95/US 301 corridor)
