The Keys are fortunate to have a massive visitor off the coast of Key Largo today, near the popular dive wreck the Duane - a whale shark. Although they are not common here, there is a sighting once ever few years, the last one being off Marathon in Vaca Cut.

For those who fear things like this in the ocean, it may be helpful to understand that whale sharks are gentle giants - similar to our other Keys friend, the manatee - and feed only on plankton. Although the have very tiny teeth, they actually filter their vegetarian diet through their gills instead.

The largest recorded whale shark was 59ft long! This one is much smaller, at about 30ft long. But with its beautiful symmetrical spots, it is still pretty awe-inspiring to look at!

That would be a dream come true, to be able to swim in view of a whale shark. I've been in the water with white tip reef sharks and once had a 6 ft long tarpon swim 1 ft away from me with out becoming startled, but never anything that big and impressive.
