Hello everyone,
I've been contemplating moving to Florida for the last 4 years. I currently live in NJ and after a severe car accident, I had to retire from the job. I did live in Port St Lucie back in December 89- March of 1990, but it wasn't for me at the time. Anyway after 34 surgeries, I'm looking to move to warmer climates cause this Jersey weather is horrible for my joints. I'm divorced with a 22 and 18 and I'm looking for a rancher on a couple of acres in a established, but quiet neighborhood. I'm not into the beach scene, nor am I into boating/ watersports. I know I sound boring but after working in my line of work, I'm ok with living the quiet life lol. So after all of that , what would you ( especially the NJ, NY, Philadelphia) transplants) recommend? I've also considered South Carolina, Texas, and Georgia. So yeah I could use some advice.
Thank You...

If you want to be on a couple acres, that pretty much means you will be doing some small town living. If your ok with that, I would looks at the Heart Land (southern Polk, Highlands, Okeechobee, glades, hendry, desoto, and hardee counties), and anywhere north of Ocala, including the panhandle (minus the Jacksonville metro)

I live in Florida, but a Texas native. I would suggest looking around the towns in East Texas. These areas are unzoned unlike the highly restrictive zoning in Florida, and you have more freedom to do what you want (subject to deed restrictions).

Tyler is less than 2 hours from Dallas, Nacogdoches is 2 hours from Houston, Texarkana and Marshall 3 hours from Dallas, an hour from Shreveport. And all have very good medical facilities, superior to Florida.

Since you are not really a beach person and cold bothers your health, I would look into Arizona.

I would recommend checking out SW Florida if you're looking for quieter and warm weather. Some of the smaller towns recommended so far are pretty rural and would be a culture shock for anyone moving from the Northeast (or most anywhere for that matter). In particular I would recommend places like Fort Myers (check out the quieter east side around Gateway) and the towns of Estero or Punta Gorda. In all three you'll find it a good bit quieter with plenty to do if desired and much less of an "adjustment" from life in NJ.

I ruled out Arizona cause my son has a hard time breathing with the weather. Great idea though. I do not want to live in a "deep in the woods" type town either. I'll check out the town's that were given to me. Is there any major differences between West coast and East coast Florida?

There is a different vibe that's hard to put a finger on but would say overall it's more laidback and has much less of a NY-NJ vibe on the Gulf coast versus the Atlantic side that some attribute to the highways believe or not. I-95 is the major north-south highway for the east coast and I-75 is the major north-south highway out of the Midwest so vacationers for decades who make the drive down to Florida tended toward one of the other depending upon origin and subsequently when moving here.

Check from Melbourne to Flaggler Beach. Small towns with excellent air quality. Several towns are small and have some rural areas and may fit your needs. look inland (West of the 95) a bit but still near the beaches and you should find several area that fit.
