My husband and I are looking to move to Florida, but we were hoping to get some guidance from people who live in Florida on which cities are recommended. The economy and jobs are of course important to us. I currently work as a doctor's assistant but am going to school for a business degree with a specialization in human resources. My husband works as a superintendent for a commercial general contractor. We will be starting a family in 1-2 years and so one of our concerns is the schools and crime levels. We do have some concerns of areas with increased hurricane activity as well. The preferred home value would be around $200,000 or lower, may consider slightly higher for the right area. Some examples I have pulled from various websites are Winter Springs, Longwood, North Port or Venice. Of course we're open to any other recommendations and appreciate any feedback and help! Thank you!

Check out the Jacksonville area which has a booming economy and lower costs of living with similar salaries as the other big cities in FL. Three of the Top 10 school districts in the state (out of 67) are there as well (#1 St John's County, #8 Clay County and #10 Nassau County). The area also has the lowest incident of hurricane activity in the state.

If considering remaining in the contracting business, start on the licensing NOW. Florida licensing is a real PITA, can cost thousands and a lot of time.

That being said, there is a LOT of business growth and new construction going on from Sarasota around to Naples. Charlotte, Sarasota and Lee Counties are three of the top 10 growth areas in the US.

Jacksonville is the 2nd fastest growing major city in the country right now and is attracting a diverse population in terms of age due to the booming economy and lower cost of living.
