Probably because outside of UF, Gainesville isn’t worth mentioning.

Without UF, Gainesville would be a fraction of the size it currently is, if that.

There’s a reason GNV only has two airlines to three cities, the lowest of any Florida airport. Because Gainesville is little more than a glorified college town.

Gainesville doesn't need its own forum but they can add Gainesville to the Ocala forum. Gainesville and Ocala are very economically linked with lots of commuters between both counties going for heathcare, shopping, and employment.

The area is growing and it will get bigger if the cross-state highway linking Tampa to Jacksonville gets built.

What's the status on this or is it just a rumor?

There are not many threads relevant to Gainesville to support a need for a sub-forum. A step toward a Gainesville sub-forum would be starting quality threads with engaging discussions about Gainesville. If a number of quality threads on Gainesville has been reached, a sub-forum could be requested.

+1
Would love to see it, as we have no interest in Ocala!

Not to mention there is no Lakeland/Winter Haven forum (Polk County) which is really a pretty huge area, growing all the time given the proximity to Tampa and Orlando. It was always a mystery to me why a ruralesque area like Ocala got a subforum and Lakeland metro did not.
