Have some friends who live in Sun City Center and make it sound close to heaven itself. Can anyone give me their assessment based on personal knowledge? I have never lived in a retirement community.

Of course I have the same questions as most: health care and finding a physician who will take you [ Medicare or Tricare ]; crime etc.

I see the phrase "condo commandos" which I gather are the self-appointed enforcers of rules.

That brings up the question of Sun City Center rules. That seems to be the tough thing to find out about these places.

Any help will be appreciated.

Default Friends

My mom and dad moved to sun city 20 years ago. They made many many great friends and bonded with many people over the years... all good from their perspective. My dad is gone and my mom is partying all the time with the ladies that are still hanging in there. I am going to stay with her tomorrow for a week. Good luck. PS... it is a very good time for a buyer there right now... very good time.

I've had grandparents and parents live there so I've visited there since 1970s to today.

The place is immaculate/orderly - and a very nice place for people over 50 to live. I've always kind of thought of it as a utopia. Everything is very neat, the people are friendly, the corporation that runs the community has done an outstanding job of development over the decades.

There is so much to do for retirees. Lots of social groups - and a lot of amenities set up for folks as they get older (bus trips, shuttle service, fitness centers, pools, golf courses, tennis courts). The medical care in the area is just a small community hospital. There are several doctor's offices in the area. I think most people go up to Tampa or Sarasota/Bradenton for urgent medical needs.

To keep the community orderly, there are rules that most 55+ probably don't have a problem with conforming to - ie. association rules - keeps the place in good shape (no parking on your front lawn)

SSC is an area for all income levels - the housing is diverse from small villas $70,000 to large homes $400k (I believe). Some retirees get a little over their heads due to some of the association fees - I do know of many people to move to SSC, buy into a home above their retirement income level, and then move away.

Anyway, those are my miscellaneous ramblings on SSC.

Default Get used to Golf Carts!

I have to add this.

I've lived in Florida for 31 years now, been all over the state, but Sun City is the only place I've seen where Golf Carts are the main mode of transportation!

I may be wrong, I've only been there twice, but I could not find a parking spot at the Bank of America for all the carts!

I disagree that golf carts are the main mode of transportation - but it makes sense for folks to drive them for short trips around SSC - electricity instead of gasoline and easier to park, quieter. You do see a lot of carts. Ever been to Brandon during rush hour? Traffic is miserable, loud.

Sun City, Florida

And yes, I've been stuck in Brandon during rush hour - no fun at all. I wasn't bashing the golf carters - I was more or less sending out a "look out" notice. Parking lots are full of them, and they fit nicely into blind spots on your vehicle.

Maybe I was wrong about the carts, too. Visited the SSC website the other day and it boasted about the carts and even showed pictures of intersections with several carts. I just want the OP to understand that SSC isn't your typical retirement home. Its a very well run community - of retired professionals - where the homes and area are immaculate, affordable, and the social scene for retirees is very active.
