I feel like that rule doesn’t apply to Florida. I find it way cheaper to live in Waldo. Florida or Flagler Beach vs Miami Beach and Key Biscayne and Palm Beach

I don’t think anyone has ever said Florida is cheap…
Orlando, Tampa, Miami, all three are expensive places to live. Demand drives the costs up.

Florida used to be cheaper, but is getting equal to the northeast. Miami has likely always been more expensive compared to the other FL cities.

Depending on what you define as cheap. Ocala is considered affordable by Florida standards but Gainesville is a big college town so probably not as cheap as you expected.

Assuming you’re referring to Palm Beach (the island), not to be confused with West Palm Beach (still not cheap either BTW) there are legit billionaires that live there full time or part time. In fact I believe the most expensive home in the state is on that island…although these things change so frequently.

In no way should these kind of places be compared to Waldo or Flagler Beach - totally different places.

We moved up from South Florida 6 years ago so here’s my take:

Housing—gone way, way up. The 4/2 house we bought for $300k is valued at $460k. Ocala would be cheaper, but not by much.

Utilities—as expensive as South Florida. They could learn from Florida Power and Light. The city knows whit about running an electric company and it shows. Ocala takes the win here.

Groceries—slightly cheaper. We still go down to South Florida and I compare the prices at Publix. Also, gobs of farmers markets here.

Insurance and taxes—so far, way, way cheaper, nearly 75% cheaper, especially if you use the Save Our Homes portability feature. If not, then maybe only about 25% cheaper.

Car insurance—so far, about 50% cheaper.

Gym and country club membership—70% cheaper.

Good luck with your search.

Florida is considered a high demand, desirable state, so prices here, while not San Francisco or NYC level, is still going to cost a premium. It’s not a “flyover” state by any means.
