My vote is Boca Raton/Delray Beach area. I might consider coastal Ft. Lauderdale as well which isn't on your list. Tampa is not AS good in the "clean air/water" front as Jacksonville or Sarasota or the South FL choices but still good compared to most of the country. Honestly, the only one I would rule out entirely is Jacksonville although even it has its nice spots that you would be interested, lower cost of living too. I might rule out Miami due to the cost of living as well. I would check out downtown Delray Beach, east of US1. Sarasota is another good choice and might cost a little less but I don't think the economy is as good (which is saying something
) and I also don't know many details. I'm sure somebody else could tell you more about Sarasota.
Consider St. Petersburg too!
I think it all comes down to this...
* you had a 100-120K salary, still wanted to save some for retirement-
Jacksonville is a clear winner here, Tampa is pretty reasonable too. Miami is worst.
* wanted a condo or small house near the beach but with a decent commute to work-
No clear winner as it depends on where or what you do, but probably Boca Raton
* were single and lived alone-
Boca Raton is by and far the safest on your list, safest out of the areas I named too, but all of the cities have their safe sections.
* wanted to be near nice beaches for swimming-
Any of the South Florida options as well as Sarasota. Tampa is 45 minutes from the beach but St. Petersburg has nice beaches nearby. I think Jacksonville beaches aren't as nice, just in my opinion.
* liked shopping-
Definitely Boca.
* liked to take classes-
What kind of classes?
* were interested in art and an artistic community-
St. Petersburg, Sarasota, south Tampa or Delray Beach which I mentioned before.
* wanted to be in a place with clean air and water-
Boca/Palm Beach County area. Tampa is generally the worst but still not bad.

With your salary the best places to live to enjoy good night life, shopping, and great beaches year round is Miami/Coral Gables or Boca Raton. I would stay away from Jacksonville if you like beaches, it gets way too cold in the winter to enjoy them. Tampa/Clearwater is also a good option.

Thats what some people on here don't understand. Some people actually want or need to live in or near a major population center and don't want or need "southern". Very beautiful part of the state though.
