I just was curious why you would consider Venezuela given what is going on there now and knowing that it is HIGHLY likely to turn into another Cuba, which would be extremely unfortunate or not where I would want to spend my last few years.[/quote]

I was just kidding...mostly. I was reading today about many people beginning to retire overseas due to the high cost of living in the US. Margarita Island in Venezuela sounds heavenly, but I haven't done any serious research. Panama is another area that has become the new Costa Rica for retirement. DH has fallen in love with Costa Rica and I think he would move there tomorrow if we were ready to retire. He has done quite a bit of mission work there and in the tent cities of the refugee camps from Nicaragua and has fallen in love with the beauty of the country and its people.

Retiring in Central and South America is a choice that many families are taking because the low cost of housing, food, and available medical services. The only turn-off on this is the local government. Just like Venezuela many countries have radical groups that are fighting the government and US personnel civilian/military are primary targets. So be careful and if you are planning on visiting one of the Latino countries visit the US embassy web-site to get a travel report.

Current Travel Warnings

Travel Warnings are issued when the State Department recommends that Americans avoid a certain country. The countries listed below are currently on that list. In addition to this list, the State Department issues Consular Information Sheets for every country of the world with information on such matters as the health conditions, crime, unusual currency or entry requirements, any areas of instability, and the location of the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate in the subject country.

What sticks in my mind is the woman that was on here singing the praises of Florida. She was even telling people that hurricanes are not that bad as long as you are prepared. This from a woman that went through Hurricane Charley.

First thing she did when she closed on her house? She gets on here and says (to paraphrase) "Thank goodness I'm outta here and boy was I terrified when I had to face a hurricane!"

I know some who moved to FL and moved right out in no time. I think some people dont want to listen to what they dont want to hear. They pay no attention to crime, hurricanes, traffic, endless summers, high costs of living, high insurance, etc. Its a shame forclosures are at an alltime high now

As for leaving the USA, I havent thought much about that, why when theres very affordable states costing a fraction of south FL?

Rico, I'm not really sure what the lowest has been for the winter. I do know that several mornings in a row it was around 8 below and the windchill was 25 below. This looks like it'll be our third mild winter in a row. We've had several days in the 30s and that's very nice for January up here. We'll be starting our next cold spell this Sat. and have a few mornings with below zero temps. If the wind doesn't blow, we'll be fine, but the wind can make it so cold.

Four or five years ago we had such a cold January. We had three weeks straight of below zero temps. Our nights were 20 or 30 below (actual temp) and our days only warmed up to about 10 below. And since your were in No. Dak., you know how cold those temps feel.

Most Floridians are from up north. They are well aware of what those temperatures feel like. You are not telling them something that they do not know.

They know what Florida is like, too.
