What do I have to do, act like, or say, in order to blend in with the ordinary Florida folks and not seem like an obnoxious tourist.. besides acting nice and polite. Politeness is key!! LOL. And we've all seen those obnoxious East Coast or Midwestern tourists in the short-shorts with the loud, whiny accents.. I am Midwestern but I am gonna try and be a "traveler", not a TOURIST!
lol
Also..
any suggestions on places/ things/ foods/ festivals/ to try, so that I can experience the "real Florida" or "old Florida"..?

thanks
HUGS ALL AROUND to you Floridians!

As long as you don't say "this is the way we do it up north" you'll fit right in. This is still the United States, after all.

Where are you going to be? the old Florida is getting hard to find. The real Florida is everything you see right now.

Oh yesh-Floridian drink a lot of Iced Tea in restaurants.

Lilybeans is right, everyone comes into the state and tells us how to do it better.

Use sunscreen, bright red skin is a sure sign your not local. Brown is good.

If you really want to feel what Florida might have been like you might want to go to Everglades city in Collier County. I don't think it's changed as much as other places. There's not much to do there so it hasn't become a destination. The Rod and Gun club has a bit of history and a good place to grab lunch. There are a number of good fishermen there so a day on the water in the Thousand Island section of the everglades will be a great time.
Goodlette on the South end of Marco Island used to be a good example of real olde Florida. Try a afternoon at Stans Idle Hour. If you're around in Jan. Stans has the annual Mullet festival and crowns the new Buzzard Lope Queen.
Check out Placida in Charlotte County, there is a small fishing community there and a nice restuarant called the Fishery. Then cross over the causeway to Gasparilla Island and visit the town of Boca Grande.

Acting polite will be the FIRST sign that you're a tourist.

If you want to fit in like a local, Drive 90MPH on the interstate and talk on your cell phone. Tell everyone you meet off, and complain about everything. You'll fit right in. Just don't mention that you're from north of the border.

Default Hey OP!

Just be yourself! You don't have to change for anyone... Most of the people in Florida are not from FL. Welcome..

If you're into shell collecting or mollusk eating, make sure you say "conK" when pronouncing the name of Florida Fighting Conch, otherwise you'll instantly reveal you identity

When asked what you have been up to? The standard defacto answer is "I've just been moseying around." You really don't need to change a thing as long as you don't remind everyone how much better it is somewhere else. That has been expressed all to often already.

I'm confused, these are not the real locals/natives. These are our new residents.

If you wander up to North Florida, you'll want to work a "y'all" in here and there...it'll make you sound like a local .
