Anybody know of a good safe inland lake to go swimming in the Central part of the state.

We drove past Lake Jackson in Sebring the other day. It's not a huge lake, but it's big enough that almost every house has a dock and boat. The downtown area is on the East side of the lake and US 27, where most of the strip shoppin g is located, is on the West side.

On the North side of the Lake the city has a small park with a swimming beach, and people were in swimming. I don't know if they have a net, if they work to keep it critter-free, or if they just have observant life guards (like the ones at the ocean who spot sharks and jellyfish).

The bottom line is that if it is a designated and protected swimming area, then sure, have at it, although there will always be a minor risk. Remember, every lake in Florida contains the chemical compound dihydrogen monoxide, which is a proven killer. More people die from inhaling dihydrogen monoxide than from all the alligator, snake and shark attacks put together.

The amoebas will melt your brain which explains the strange driving habits of most Floridians.

A melted brain also attracts the gators. It's hard to swim in central Florida when it's hot.

So far, only two people have been eaten by the gators this year but they (the gators) grab small dogs all the time. Just turn on the news at night and you'll see a man standing there at the water's edge with an empty leash. Our small dog owners here are not that bright.

Water's edge + small dog + oblivious dog owner + gator in lake = Headline on the ten o'clock news (unless a pit bull story happens on the same day).

we wake board in the Maitland chain of lakes all the time... there are houses all around them and it is a busy chain... so I haven't seen or heard any reports of alligators. But I must warn you... it will cost over $100/year to use the lakes (June to June)... and for our family it was worth every penny!
