Living in louisiana now but always wanted to move to florida. Looking for an area that is affordable and has good schools. Have a 2 year old so elementary schools with good ratings is important but anything is better than the options in louisiana? Also a family of teachers so best areas of schools really is important for employment as well. Any suggestions/ Leaning towards the middle of florida above orlando or possibly tampa. Been hit too many times by hurricanes so not sure about living on the beach but want to live near the beach..cant live in florida and not love the beach.

Find a job, then a school, then housing...in that order.

No where in Fl is safe from a hurricane.

I agree with the other posters, find a job first then worry about the rest. There are good public schools in Florida. You can check out school ratings at greatschools.net.

You are in college? How are you just going to up and move? First thing you need to do is figure out what colleges in Florida issue teaching degrees and what ones you can transfer your credits to. And keep in mind that until you've been here for a year, you will have to pay out-of-state tuition at any of the public colleges. Then you need to apply to the colleges and see if you can even get in.

There are no teaching jobs in Florida unless you are special ed or ESL certified, so don't plan on working here after you graduate, because it's not likely to happen.

Are you in college now or looking to start?

Annerk is right. Find a school for yourself first. Post some school choices and maybe we can help you with opinions of the area.

Why do you want to leave Louisiana?

Thank you all for the feedback. I am actually doing University of Phoenix-tampa campus starting next year so again it would be a florida degree and it is online. I am taking a few courses now but with a toddler cant be fulltime just yet. I want to leave louisiana bc there isnt any opportunities for children in education as well as they pay horribly for teachers. Also, louisiana is severely corrupt..we have the worst roads in the country and yet we have tons of casinos and we are at top of the oil industry..so we have the money but it isnt used properly. Students have to use the same textbooks from when i was in school, parents have to pay for everything bc the school board doesnt provide anything to help teachers to teach the children so teachers have to spend their hard-earned pay as well as rely on parents for assistance. i can go on but you get my drift. Florida might not be the best state in the world but it has been a long dream of mine since i was a kid as well as better education i am sure for my son as well as maybe not just yet but at some point a better job opportunity for me. With this recession, the move is not going to be overnight..right now, i am just trying to find the best location with the best schools as well as something that isnt like louisiana..living in the boondocks where there is nothing to do, nowhere to go to evacuate as well as expensive taxes with no results..paying for nothing basically. Hope that clears up some questions. Not crazy..just being practical..it will be an adjustment but much needed one.

I ask why because the answer can provide details to better answer the poster.

In this case I would stick with any of the big cities and the surrounding areas. That will be your best bet for employment.
