And government will decide which high paying jobs are worth investing in. Talk to the Russians about a command economy. Sheesh.....
Banks can borrow money from the federal reserve at the discount window, or they can borrow from other banks at the federal funds rate of 1%. Anything over 1% pure profit.

So yes, a state bank can set rates. If this state bank gets money at 1%, then it can easily offer 2% mortgages and 5% credit card interest.

Yes, you should talk to the state run bank of China. They are the ones that the united states runs to for emergency money. The state run bank of china saved us last fall and kept us out of a great depression. And be sure to thank the state run bank of china that your bank did not close it's doors last fall and leave you penniless. (the fdic is broke and only has one penny for every dollar of deposits it insures)

Some people just love inefficency.

I doubt this guy will get elected, there are too many dumb hillbillies and right wing wackos in florida that would rather pay 30% credit card interest to bank of america rather than pay 5% to the bank of the state of florida which would create jobs and lower taxes.

what role, if any, do you believe the govt has in creating jobs for the million or so floridians out of work?
No, The bank idea is absurd, the big 4 are not gonna allow that(Citi, Wells, BoA & Chase) They control everything, this country and every other country in the world and probably the universe.

I'm sure alternative energy is gonna be the next Bubble, but they will be financed by the big 4 as usual. So predictable...

The State Bank plan has some merit if it is run on sound principles. The problem is that, going forward, the managers may have some other ideas and start running it into the ground. At that point, what institution, if any, would guarantee depositors?

The idea of 18 million insurance customers acting as a sort of monopsony (opposite of monopoly) sounds good and may be worth a try.

I too am not convinced of the alternative energy thing. It seems to me that the various technologies are still relatively early in the development stage and it may prove costly to install premature fixed investment on top of already too expensive fixed investment: if the technologies change and improve within ten years it may all be another expensive mistake. Having said that, doing nothing is not an option, but in the meantime more intelligent use and conservation of existing sources and technologies are safe bets. However, I like the idea of electric cars for motorists who need less than 50 miles a day in transport.

Interesting, but not surprising, that the plan pays lip service to primary and secondary education teachers, proposing more money - as if that were really the problem - but in the end it focuses more concretely on higher education.

Good education begins at home. I would prefer to see proposals on the tax deductibility of private school tuition and home schooling expenses, then the focus on higher public education: Florida's prepaid tuition program is already pretty good, we can build on that.

Who are the alternative candidates and do they have alternative plans available on the internet?

Its a great idea and has worked in other industries in other states.
His theory of one "One jobs creates six more" has worked very well
in Silicon Valley, for example.....Florida is imploding on its own lack
of educational/tech resources. Our wise and all knowing uberlords,
Developers and their henchmen politicians, are quite happy keeping
Florida a state that is known for a cartoon mouse and old people who
golf and drive Buicks and it shows. The front page of the Palm Beach
Post has whole story about how fab the new Target on PB Lakes BLVD is.....
Does anyone still have wonder how the rusty fork stuck in us got there ?

Actually, the new Target is a coup for the immediate area on PB Lakes Blvd., which is economically depressed. Many people in the post last year were making "bets" that Target was going to just raze the old location and not come back. The PB Lakes corridor has been slowly improving, except for the old Palm Beach Mall, which is ripe for something new and fresh to come along. The residents in the area, often unskilled and not very educated, rely on and depend on retail and service jobs.

That being said, I have posted a few threads in the WPB portion of the forum the last couple of months, with positive economic stories for the county, including companies looking to expand in the county, due to the new affordability of the county, and newer higher tech jobs also looking to expand and develop in PBC.

Those threads have been ignored, along with threads that show decrease in crime in the State, showing that people are more apt to criticize and point out what's "wrong" than to consider what positives exist to build off of. PBC in particular has invested millions and millions in attracting diversified businesses to the county, including the nacent biotech corridor in North County. Even Port St. Lucie has been trying. Do you have any other suggestions as to what more can be done?

PBC and the counties just north of it are also investing in farm-to-fuel, biofuels, which ties in with biotech research, now with a base in northern PBC.

I like initiatives that seek to avoid waste, put everything to use, and maintain (or recover) self-sufficiency, like it used to be.

Palm Beach County and its neighbors to the north have unique, almost complete agriculture (grains, fruits and vegetables, animal husbandry), I am in favor of initiatives that promote it and increase its uses and profitability.

FL will never have a Silicon Valley unless they import people in from out of state and out of the country.

I agree FL lacks the educational/tech resources.

The largest employer in FL is a theme park.
