Do you reuse containers? I do. I save jars that had pickles or olives, etc. and pickle more stuff in them, like kimchi or my own pickled garlic. I was thinking about this today. I was jonesing for some KFC - a rare treat that I indulge in about once a year or two- and noted the side dish for my 4 piece dinner - 2 today, 2 tomorrow - was reusable. Heck, it's microwavable and dishwasher safe.
My mom used to use those Shedd's spread Country Crock containers to store food in.
I have a set of Le Parfait glass jars that I use for shopping. They are not recycled, as I bought them new, but I do reuse them every week. (I have the store assign a tare weight.) Oh, wait, I just remembered our jam jars. When we were still eating jam, I kept the Bonne Maman jars. I have about a dozen or so, and I use them for storing bits of this and that. Very little plastic comes into our house, and all of it is recycled.
I used to keep all that stuff, but within the last year I decided it wasn't worth the hassle and the clutter--not to mention the questionable advisability of keeping things in plastic. Instead, I went out and bought myself a cupboard full of Pyrex glass storage containers. They are easy to sort/store, they look nice, and they aren't leaching carcinogens into my food. I'm in heaven!
I always recycle. Sometimes it is difficult to part with a particularly nice glass container, such as the ones high-quality natural iced teas tend to come in. But I have a nice set of drinking glasses, and I have a water bottle to take me on the go, so I quell my instinct to over-save and into the recycle bin it goes.
