Garden salad, or any other salad...potato, macaroni, cole slaw etc. Maybe a side of baked beans as well.

I've had all types. I believe it is quite bland ..no mustard mostly mayo and little if any additions such as celery, Bell pepper, olives. It probably contains eggs and onion. Look in recipes under Sweet/Dill poll.

There is another German potato salad with oil/vinegar dressing, bacon, chives and served warm.

Now I would eat that "German" potato salad. It looks much better than most so called German potato salads. I like lots of mustard, dill ,eggs, onion, bell pepper etc...

^^^ is actually really easy to do. The Whole Food recipe is pretty close to the original German recipe I know.
