I don't know if it's just me, but I have noticed it became really popular since sometime in the last decade (can't remember when) because of health reasons. I mean, it became really well known and started being used by people who didn't or hadn't used it before as a cooking oil, didn't it? Presumably it existed before then , but I don't know why it suddenly came on the radar so recently.

Me too! I have never thought Olive oil was nasty. If you are going to fry you use canola, vegetable oil or peanut oil not Olive oil.

Agreed. I also use olive oil for eggs as I don't use bacon very often. And I will add it to butter to avoid browning.

I fry very little, but if I did I obviously wouldn't use olive oil. I mostly use olive oil for coating veggies that I toss with herbs and seasonings and roast, for tossing hot pasta, for making marinara, and for making pizza crust.

The US is currently NOT a member of the International Olive Oil Council (IOCC), hence we tend to be a dumping ground for the world's garbage olive oils. Even extra virgin olive oils here can be garbage. In the US, there is very, very little oversight on what can be labeled as "first pressed EVOO". EVOO in the US is definitely inferior compared to what you can get abroad, mostly because olive oil manufacturers can get away with cutting EVOOs with inferior garbage in order to create more volume to sell and yet still can label it here as EVOO

I use olive oil for everything I would have had to use vegetable oil for, including frying of which I do very little of. The better the quality of olive oil you get the better taste you will find, if you are buying store brand it will have a rather strong taste. I love it over noodles!

All of the above!
I also use it to make bread, and I even have some cake recipes that have olive oil in them.

I use it almost exclusively... recently bought a CA olive oil and was impressed with the flavor...plus it is 100% oo, unlike some imports...
