Stuff I ate while studying in Africa, most likely... warthog sausage (really like any other pork, but more gamey, since it's wild boar), impala (venison equivalent), crocodile tail, ostrich steak.
Barbacoa. For those who are unfamiliar, it the head of a cow that is slow roasted outdoors in a pit. It is usually served in a corn tortilla with either salsa, avocado, onions, and lime juice. It is high in fat but delicious if prepared correctly. Sadly, after my last physical, I've has to cut back on Tex-Mex cuisine.
Tonight I accidently discovered something I like. I had made a salad with French dressing and had some dressing left on my plate. I made steamed peas and just put them on the plate and mixed it up and they are good with French dressing.
I was once traumatized years ago because our grandmother in Puerto Rico tricked us into eating it, telling us it was chicken, but we had suspicions it wasn't. This was especially messed up because she knew we had pet rabbits at home and couldn't imagine eating them in a million years.
Was there any food that you really liked but tasted or looked really weird? If so what was that food?
Well, for some reason the following popped into my mind immediately:
I was traveling through eastern Europe right after the Berlin Wall went down. I stopped at a little restaurant tucked away in a little town in Slovakia. I could read German but I couldn't read a lick of Czech, so I just waited till something came out of the kitchen that looked vaguely familiar to me.
A waiter brought out something that looked like spaghetti with meat sauce and put it down in front of the patron at a nearby table. I love spaghetti, so I excitedly gestured to my waiter that that was what I wanted.
When they brought it to me, it LOOKED like spaghetti but didn't taste anything like spaghetti. The sauce was cinnamon based and very sweet, but it had meat in it. Now, I know that some people make a sweet red sauce with a touch of cinnamon in it, but that's not what I mean. I mean this sauce, which contained some sort of meat, was SWEET and had quite a bit of cinnamon in it.
Once I cleared my head of the expectation of Italian style spaghetti sauce, I came to realize that the dish, whatever they called it, was delicious.
I don't know but I always found Gyros to be weird and delicious
