One thing I enjoy doing is trying unique cuisines. Under that heading falls every African cuisine. Perhaps North African (Moroccan, Algerian, etc.) food and drink is most familiar, but finding somebody locally who has tried any real African dish other than grocery store couscous would be unusual.

I've so far tried Moroccan (I was there), Nigerian, Ethiopian, Ugandan, Somali, and Djiboutienne food.

My favorite, by far, is Ethiopian food. I love their bread (injera), which is reminiscent (for me) of sourdough bread, as well as their wats (stews). One of the greatest things about Ethiopian restaurants is that they all seem to have combo platters, where you can try many things cheaply.

Somali food is good, too, particularly the green sauce most restaurants serve.

On the other hand, I was underwhelmed by the food I had in Morocco, especially their tagines. I never realized that the vegetables were cooked whole! On the other hand, I frequented an excellent sandwich vendor in Meknes, and enjoyed some Berber food (madfounah or "Berber pizza", kaliyah).

I eat a very highly adapted version of "Nigerian pepper soup" at home. I once tried "real" Nigerian pepper soup at a tiny restaurant in Minneapolis, and it was perhaps one of the oddest things I ever tasted. Later I came home and realized that there were a lot of Nigerian spices that were totally unfamiliar to me, unlike, say, in Indian and Ethiopian food.

Which African cuisines have YOU tried? Which are your favorites, and not-so-favorites?

Ethiopian and Kenyan food are the extent of my experience with African cuisine so far. Both are good, but, like you, I prefer Ethiopian. The only time I get to eat it is when I go to NYC, so I make it a point to eat it whenever I'm there. The injera is good, and I get a combo that has a couple of different lentil stews and some meat-based dishes. I also love the honey wine!

Just a side thing about Ethiopian food - well, others' perception of it - why do people feel compelled to make comments such as "what's Ethiopian cuisine - three pieces of rice?" I know that they are just trying to be funny, but it gets old about the 500th time you hear it. Yes, I've seen all the Save The Children commercials, too, but come on.

Haven't met an Ethiopian/Eritrean meal I haven't completely enjoyed. Also lucky to have a fantastic Moroccan restaurant nearby and some Egyptian and South African friends, so have enjoyed much of that. I personally make a mean Senegalese groundnut (peanut) stew. Can't say I've even encountered Nigerian or anything from Central Africa, so no chance to taste.

I love Moroccan food from traveling in the country. Nothing beats a beef and prune tagine

Ethopian is great. Moroccan and Egyptian too. I made a Sengalese peanut stew once with a recipe online, not sure how authentic it was but wow it was good. Need to explore more of this continent's cuisine.

One peculiar thing about Ethiopian cuisine is eating a lot raw meat:

Ethiopia on Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern - YouTube

Probably not a feature of Ethiopian restaurants in the West though lol.

I'd like to try Ethiopian if I can find an Ethiopian restaurant. I've only tried Moroccan and Egyptian, which seemed just like Lebanese-Turkish with kebabs.etc.

Best African food? OMG, Ethiopian food! I love it, especially the D'nich Wott (Potatoe Stew). It is to die for but I eat Ethiopian food with a fork, instead of the traditional way (by hand).

By the way, the above dish is vegetarian. That's the thing with Ethiopian food, their vegeterian dishes are excellent. This is not to say their meat dishes are bad but as you all know, for any meat dish to be tasty, the quality of the meat has to be very high but with today's food costs going up all the time, most restaurants are not able to purchase quality meats which is why meat dishes do not taste the best. You can never go wrong with veggies, so enjoy!
