Not gourmet food, but chicken wings used to be dirt cheap compared to other parts of the bird. I remember before wings became fashionable, you could pick them up on sale for 19 cents a pound. Sure, inflation would make them more expensive, but in today's dollars, they would still be in the 45-60 cents a pound range compared to breasts at $4/lb.
When I was a kid, we'd visit my aunt and uncle on Block Island in the summer. They caught so many lobsters that we kids would complain about all the lobster salad we had to eat. My aunt fed lobster to the cats too.

Oh yeah, my mom would buy chicken wings and fry them. They were my dad's favorite part. Chicken in general used to be cheap. Also, skirt steak used for making fajitas. Its tough as shoe leather and was cheap. That's why people bought it and the tenderized it and marinated in stuff like lime juice. Just to make it chewable.
I'd give my left ....... to get sick of lobster! Cats eating lobster, location location location!
Wings shock me at the store. Flank, skirt, also shocking at the price. Brisket is even going nuts! Wasn't long ago I could get a packer for $1.50/#, now it's $3.50+ Now I'm doing more offal hope'n that the price goes up on that and good cuts go down in price. Reverse psychology, somewhat.
I'd forgotten about how expensive brisket has gotten. We used to buy them on sale for $.89 a pound. It was always a cheap way to feed a lot of people. We hadn't done one in a few years, and decided to smoke one recently. I nearly fainted when I saw the price.

Back in the Fifties, chicken was MUCH more expensive than beef. My mom still has a recipe from that era for "city chicken" made of skewered veal. People fixed it because veal was much easier to afford than any sort of chicken.
