We have several daily tip type threads a day but none devoted specifically to food items. So I'll be posting not a tip but a list of what has been scientifically analyzed from single food items without any seasonings or added ingredients that you or a food vendor might add. A sergeant Friday approach. Jut the facts, nothing but the facts. The single source if from the USDA guide "The Nutritive Value of Foods" that is in public domain and free for a PDF file. Those interested can purchase a hard copy. For a little background information I bought a copy in 1986 right after I bought my first computer and used it to write my second computer program to analyze meals. There will be no rhyme or reason to the order of items. Just what ever I might think about or see in a sale ad in a flyer. Bear in mind these are for the serving size listed and not the serving sizes we typically eat. Tate note that groupings such as fat are rounded up to the next whole gram. I will not be changing any numbers listed.

g = Grams
mg = Milligrams

So starting with a banana, item #280

Size 7" to 7 7/8" long.
Weight 118 g
Water 74 g
Calories 109
Protein 1 g
Total Fat 1 g
Sat Fat .2 g
Monounsaturated fat Trace
Polyunsaturated fat .1 gg
Cholesterol 0 gg
Carbohydrate 28 g
Calcium 7 mg
Iron .4 MG
Potassium 467 g
Sodium 1 mg
Vitamin A 96 IU
Vitamin A 9 RE
Thiamin 0.05 mg
Riboflavin 0.12 mg
Niacin 0.6 mg
Ascorbic Acid 11 mg

Yes the banana. I never knew it had so many carbohydrates in one little old stinking banana until my last hospital stay and was on a constant carb diet. They are off my list of foods to eat due to carbs. Darn!

Thanks nomad. This is a good thing for people to look at. I was never very good at analyzing food items, but I'm learning now and some are really surprising. I always assumed I could eat lots of fruits and vegetables and be safe and healthy and happy. NOT according to my dietician.

One addition the the chart I missed. Correct on the new charts already.

Following the Carbohydrate category:

Dietary Fiber 2.8 g

should have been listed.

These threads are very informative and I especially appreciate the carbohydrate information.....but I wonder if the banana has a sugar content? That's crucial, for me, as well.
Great idea, Nomadicus!

From what I have read it is not just the sugar in bananas. The complex carbs in bananas convert to sugar very fast in our bodies spiking blood sugar. I can't really say that but the warning on some sites about bananas is to that effect stating that they are high hypoglycemic. They are a two edged sword for me. I badly need the potassium but not the sugars. Best info on that will come from either your doctor or dietician.

I don't know. At one time that was still undetermined. I think it varies with individual body chemistry like a lot of other things. I have suspicions about the RDA guides but I'm not a dietician either.
