I don't mean salt and pepper. But a spice that wouldn't ruin the taste of some foods. I just ate some potatoes with bacon and cheese sauce on top and it could of used something to give it some zip. It was a little bland.

Other than salt and pepper I don't know of any one herb or spice that can be used on anything. But one or a combination of the following might work with the food you mentioned:

Paprika (especially hot or smoked paprika)
Dill Weed
Curry Powder
Chives
Garlic powder
Onion powder
Cajun seasoning

One spice for everything? Nope. One spice for savory and one spice for sweet? Maybe. Possibly. I'd pick garlic and cinnamon for those two categories.

But the spice you put on corn beef and cabbage, isn't going to be the same spice you sprinkle over a slice of cheesecake.

Mrs. Dash is intended to be used on anything. But it's an herb blend, of course.

and I would add to your list, nut meg, in small amounts

As for Mrs Dash, I think it is awful. But I know a lot of people who like it.

Forgetting about the sweet, I'd say garlic or onion powder improve the taste of everything, including Weight Watchers Frozen dinners!

I agree with AnonChick - there isn't going to be one spice for everything - but we always make sure to have garlic powder on hand and Penzy's Turkish spice blend ( salt, garlic, cumin, Tellicherry black pepper, Turkish oregano, sweet paprika, sumac, cayenne red pepper, and cilantro).

If you are just looking for something to keep on hand to 'punch up' bland food....find a blend you like....it's gonna have more depth then just a single spice...but still in only one container.

For sweet things, apple pie spice (normally cinnamon, nutmeg, mace and cloves) is a nice sweet blend and vanilla (liquid or vanilla sugar) is always good to have on hand.

Potatoes with bacon and cheese sauce on top, bland? There are a million ways to make that, I guess, but most would not be bland. If you posted your recipe, that would help.
