I'll stick mine in the freezer until I'm ready for 13 bean soup. How about you?

We don't eat ham anymore, but the bone used to go into navy bean soup, sometimes split pea.

I make ham and bean soup, using great northern beans and plenty of ham meat, not just the little bits. I like lots of fresh garlic and bay leaves.

Soak it down in the crockpot on low, scrap the meat off and remove the bone, add in dried kidney or pinto beans, seasonings, bay leaves, and onion, bell pepper and celery for red beans and rice.

I LOVE red beans and rice, just like you said. With scallions too, and some hot hot peppers.

Be careful. I understand raw bones are OK for dogs but not cooked ones cause they splinter.

We do the same. sometimes it will be in there for months. This year our family is all over the place. Our daughter and son in law leave for a cruise Friday, our younger granddaughter and family are in the Florida pan handle and don't get home til late Sunday afternoon and the other granddaughter and her family are busy with church. It happens to be my BD as well, so we are just going out after church and will do our ham/turkey Easter dinner on Mothers day. I will use the bone for split pea soup probably. If not, bean soup.
