One of my recipes that was a finalist but didn't win was an avocado stuffed baked potato recipe. I don't remember all the ingredients but the potatoes were baked and the inside removed and mashed with avocado and other ingredients, then the potato shells were stuffed with the filling and baked until hot.
The filling was a light green shade and after baking the potatoes were topped with snipped fresh chives and flat leaf parsley. Very attractive!
All my life people have been telling me that my rhubarb cream pie is a winner. So a couple of years ago I entered it in the county fair to test it out. I won a blue ribbon.
It's really quite a vanity thing, though. I had to pay more to get into the fair and to enter it (then to get back in at the end of the week to claim my prize) than what the prize was worth.
When I went to pick it up it had been a hot week and the pie was unrefrigerated. So it was green and fuzzy. Imagine how that looked! Hah.
I tucked my ribbon and the uncashed check into my favorite cookbook just for my own personal satisfaction.

Lodestar, you might want to look at the site for your state's fair. I think most states are modernizing the process.
My state has a pretty good system. You drop off your items a day or two before the judging. They do the judging in private and they mail the premium checks and ribbons.
All I have to do is drive out there, drop off my stuff and come on back home.

Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out. Why not? I'm still feeling some proud about my pie.
I guess I have been pretty lucky cause I have won a few contests or awards I guess you would say. Twice I have gotten recipes printed in "Good Cooks" magazine and been awarded something (not money for them) and I have won a lot of blue ribbons at the Valencia County fair in NM.
3 years in a row I won "high point" for my canned goods and lots of blue ribbons. I was so, so, so excited. I also won first for my almond zucchini bread one year plus a couple 2nd and 2rd places for baked goods. When we moved to AR I entered a lot of canned goods in the county fair, but the competition was a little steeper. I didn't do as well. I did win a couple blues.. I am thinking of trying again this year...Just for the fun of it.
My cousin's shrimp & grits has won all kinds of contests in Charleston and my grandmother and aunts have numerous recipes in Charleston Receipts.
