The corn starch prevents the sugar particles from clumping. The only way to avoid it is to grind your own powdered sugar. People once had only loaf sugar available; they had to grind it into powder themselves.

There's also corn starch and other materials mixed with preshredded cheese for the same reason and to prevent mold as long as possible.

I agree with Happy....it sort of has to be there in commercial powdeed sugar...why the shock...it's been there from the started of packaged powdered sugar...not exactly hidden....and the percent is tiny....so what is your objection?

Put me in the camp of why this is an issue? If you are using it for frosting, it also helps with keeping your frosting thick and creamy too.

I didn't know that. I've only bought that--stuff--a couple of times, and I didn't read the package.

If you get organic it will have something like arrowroot starch instead.

And arrowroot is that different from corn starch how? Some also may use tapioca powder... and yes...there is organic cornstarch that some powdered sugar brands use....so....again....commercial powdered sugar...even organic... will always need a starch of some sort added.....what is the actual issue?

It's a little different for us - my DH is allergic to corn. Fortunately, it's a mild allergy, but it's unpleasant to be kept up half the night with allergies. I don't use much powdered sugar, but it's a consideration when I do.

Why is this such a shock? Been this way for years and years and years. Nothing new. It even says so on the bag! No one is hiding it.
