Did not know about freezing them prior to cooking. We'll try that out!
Quite a few things are like that, when they thaw they are the same consistency and texture as when cooked. I always keep my poblano peppers in the freezer, and bananas, since I usually fry them with beans and rice.
If I buy whole mushrooms and then decide to slice them, I always trim off the bottom of the stem. When I buy sliced mushrooms, I don't do that. So even though they're the same price per pound, I guess I'm actually getting a little more for my money when I buy the sliced mushrooms!
We live within five miles of "The Mushroom Capital of the World," so there are lots of options for purchasing them, including at retail outlets of the factories themselves. I always buy them the way they will be used. Lucky for us, there's no price difference.
We're not quite that close, but we can smell it from here. I only wish I was kidding! I grew up running around in mushroom houses, and picking mushrooms, but didn't like to eat them until I was an adult.
I generally buy whole, unless I'm feeling lazy or in a hurry. Tonight, we got sliced for our burgers.
I don't know why, but the sliced ones I find at HyVee stay fresh longer than the whole ones, even if I wash them as I need them instead of ahead of time. Since there's a very small difference in price, not having to throw them out because they've gone bad is worth it.
I try not to buy anything pre-sliced (as in pre-packaged and pre-sliced), whether its deli meats or fruits/veggies. This is mainly to do with the additional cost often associated with such a "luxury," but also because of the weird tastes that I find certain pre-sliced foods have (its like when the food item is cut open/up "prematurely," it loses some of its flavor and tastes sort of funny in my view). Still, there are exceptions, such as when the deli counter is closed and I cannot have my meats cut to order; I'll buy the pre-packaged and pre-sliced meats in the deli aisle then if I'm in a rush and don't want to wait until the next day for the deli counter to open. Another exception is cheese for sandwiches, though I'd prefer that this is cut to order as well.
Depends on my daily LQ -- laziness quotient. LOL But I haven't noticed any difference in shelf life between whole and sliced mushrooms.
