There's no such thing as a knife that doesn't need sharpening, but if your daughter doesn't cook much or doesn't care much about cooking utensils, a serrated blade might be a better choice for her at this juncture. A ceramic blade stays sharp longer, typically, but costs more to have sharpened. Or, get her a simple, basic chef's knife like the Victornix linked above and a very simple roll-over knife sharpener.

Wusthof. I've had mine for years and never sharpened them.

I love this line too. I think they are a great deal. Knives get dull no matter what kind you buy.

You really should. Good knives are made to be sharpened. A dull Wusthof is a travesty.

I have a stone, as well as an electric I use from time to time on my Wusthofs. I use the stone only for my Shuns.

It sounds like the OP just needs a cheap starter knife. Go look at Target or TJ Maxx.

Well thats an accident waiting to happen. Even if you get one of them chef choice sharpeners(which i have for quick tuneups).

Shame to have such high quailty cutlery and not up to its performance maximum.

A good, sturdy Wusthof or Henkels like this one: J.A. HENCKELS INTERNATIONAL :: Product Range :: Cutlery :: Series overview :: Classic :: 8" Chef's Knife along with a honing steel like this one: Amazon.com | J.A. Henckels Twin Four Star 10-Inch Honing Steel: Knife Sharpeners will go forever before it needs to be truly sharpened. (Yes, all good knives are made to be sharpened eventually).

I hone this knife against the steel (just a couple of swipes of the blade on each side at a 20 degree angle - super quick and easy) every time I take it out of the block to use it. It's been at least a couple of years since I've needed to truly have it sharpened and I use that knife pretty much every day. It's my favorite kitchen tool.
