Red Delicious is cheap and good if you know how to select them. You want one that is rock hard. I press my thumb into one. If it gives, its an old apple thats been in storage too long.
Normally the ones in the store are too mushy for me. They're probably best fresh. I love honey crisp and there is another one that is similar...pink something.
I don't know where y'all get your apples, but the red Delicious apples I buy are terrific. They make a nice cracking sound when you bite into them. I chill them before eating. Can't beat them!
But I see you points of view as well. My DW only likes Grannies and Gala's. So we keep two types of apples in the house.

That 'nice cracking' sound is the tough skin. It's great that you like them and don't mind the texture of the fleash.....but let's not pretend that they are anything but an over bred red delious.
I'm not a huge fan of Red Delicious. The ones we get here have very little taste, yet have an after taste, and are very dry and not crisp, juicy, or sweet. I think Jazz Apples are pretty good.
Red Delicious Apples were my absolute favorite as a kid (that was a loooong time ago ) I have to say that something has changed though, and even when I've bought them fresh from the orchard (we have multiple orchards right here in town) they are still bland tasting, mealy flesh and thick, tough skin. Very sad. My new favorite (past 10 years since I've move here) is the Honey Crisp. They are exactly what their name suggests:sweet, juicy and crisp. Just... well, Delicious

They're still bland...if they have a notable flavor at all, it's that of being somewhat blandly sweet. Like watered down apple juice. Which is funny, because they aren't particularly juicy.
I prefer apples that walk the more tart side of the sweet-tart dichotomy. Red Delicious just really don't deliver in that department.
No, they are always tasteless & mealy, & I disliked apples for a long time because of them. I now live in the Pacific Northwest, & the variety & flavor of apples is awesome...now, I love apples, can't wait for apple season! I found Romes last fall, hadn't seen those in years, & made a crockpot applesauce that was so good, DH gobbled it up...& he never liked applesauce before. We have an apple tree on our property, and our dog climbs in it to eat the apples!
